Plaza
Catalunya, the heart of Barcelona
This is where the airport bus stops and the underground has several
lines. Trains go from Plaza Catalunya to the north of Catalunya to Figueras
where the Dali museum is, for example, and a few blocks away at Paseo
de Gracia you can catch trains south to places such as the pretty coastal
town of Sitges. In Plaza Catalunya you have the department store El
Corte Ingles and from here Paseo de Gracia stretches uptown, lined with
smart shops and impressive examples of Modernist architecture including
buildings by Gaudí and Domčnech.
Going from Plaza Catalunya to the sea is The Ramblas which has been
described as the most beautiful street in the world and certainly is
one of the most lively.
Plaza Catalunya also has a tourist information centre and Barcelona's
sightseeing tour bus leaves from here.
